Many parents, teachers, and even some experts (and by expert, I mean research guys with studies to back their opinion) now say that the public schools offer too much homework for students. In fact, homework tripled since 1977, leaving students of the public school system hindered by hours of homework, pressured from schools, and seeing less opportunity to enjoy play and creative classes.
It could be argued that all work a homeschooler does is homework, but homeschoolers recognize that whatever work our children receive, focuses on learning the material, understanding the concepts, and mastering the skill or subject. How much work this entails is entirely up to the parent to decide.
I often have worksheets, but if I see my son gets the concept, we move onto something else. I then review later just to make sure he understands what he is learning. Why waste time on things he already understands?
Another aspect of homeschooling I enjoy includes times when my son struggles, I can give him a break and return later. Public school teachers don’t get that opportunity. The pressure to keep a schedule and fulfill obligations set by the administration need to be met.
